The second-smallest of the inhabited Balearic Islands combines an amazing variety across around 570 square kilometres: world-famous clubs and beach clubs, turquoise coves and long sandy beaches, a UNESCO World Heritage-listed old town, a green interior criss-crossed by pine and fig trees, and a hippie heritage that is still felt today. This guide gives you a compact overview of the whole island – and from here takes you deeper into places, beaches, hotels and nightlife.
If you understand Ibiza, you can plan more relaxed. In the South you’ll find Playa d'en Bossa, Las Salinas and the Ses Salines Nature Park, home to the island’s most famous beaches – this is also where the nightlife is at its liveliest. The West around San Antonio (Sant Antoni de Portmany) is the younger, livelier party hub with the famous Sunset Strip and the dreamy coves Cala Comte and Cala Bassa. The East around Santa Eulalia is considered family-friendly and quieter, with well-kept beaches and great food. The North around San Juan (Sant Joan) is the greenest, most unspoilt corner, with hippie markets and hidden calas such as Benirràs. And right in the middle is Ibiza Town (Eivissa) with the old town Dalt Vila, the harbour and the largest selection of restaurants and culture.
Every place has its own character: Ibiza Town for history, shopping and going out; San Antonio for sunsets and proximity to clubs; Santa Eulalia for relaxed family holidays; Santa Gertrudis and San Juan for an authentic, peaceful island life. In our place portraits you’ll find the most important information for each place, nearby beaches and suitable hotels.
Ibiza has over fifty beaches and coves – from the lively town beach to the secluded rocky cove that you can only reach on foot. Classics include Cala Comte with views of the offshore islands, the natural beach Las Salinas, family-friendly Cala Bassa and the hippie bay Benirràs with its Sunday drumming sessions at sunset. In our beach overview you can filter by region, family-friendliness and facilities.
Clubbing made Ibiza world-famous. The big names – Pacha, Amnesia, Hï Ibiza, Ushuaïa, DC10 and the new UNVRS – attract the world’s best DJs every summer. If you prefer something more relaxed, enjoy a beach club during the day or the sunset at Sunset Strip. You can find current residencies and line-ups in our Party Calendar, an overview in the club overview and relaxed spots in the Bars & beach clubs. For in-demand nights, you should secure tickets in advance through official channels.
From design hotels in Playa d'en Bossa to family hotels in Santa Eulalia and rustic fincas in the countryside, Ibiza has something for every type of traveller. If you want flexibility and independence, choose a holiday apartment or holiday home; fincas are usually set in the rural interior of the island and are ideal for peace and privacy. Browse through our Hotels or compare Holiday homes & holiday apartments for your stay.
Ibiza is served by Eivissa Airport (IBZ) in the south of the island, which has direct seasonal flights from many German-speaking cities. Alternatively, you can reach the island by ferry from the Spanish mainland or from Mallorca and Formentera. Once there, the most flexible option is a rental car – especially if you want to get to the more remote coves and villages. In high season, early booking is recommended.
Ibiza has a mild Mediterranean climate with long, dry summers. The high season from June to September offers warm swimming weather and the full range of clubs and beach clubs. If you prefer it quieter and cheaper, travel in May, early June or September/October: pleasant temperatures, less hustle and bustle, and often better prices. In winter, the island is quiet and green – ideal for hikes and peace. You can find details month by month on our page about weather & best time to travel.
Behind the party backdrop lies more than 2,500 years of history: Phoenicians, Romans and Catalans have shaped the island, and the old town Dalt Vila is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Add to that the lively hippie heritage with its markets (Las Dalias, Punta Arabí) and the natural wonder of Es Vedrà, the striking rock off the southwest coast. A popular day trip takes you to the neighbouring island of Formentera with its Caribbean-like beaches. More on this in our Ibiza Info.
