Cova des Cuieram in the north of Ibiza is not an ordinary stalactite cave, but one of the island’s most important archaeological sites. Numerous votive offerings and relics were discovered here, indicating ritual use in antiquity. The cave is particularly well known as a sanctuary of the goddess Tanit, an important deity of the Phoenician-Punic world.
A visit is worthwhile above all because of the historical significance and the special atmosphere of the place. Anyone interested in early history, religion and archaeology gets a rare insight into Ibiza’s ancient past here. The entrance is in rather remote countryside near Sant Joan, which is why the cave is often combined with an excursion to the island’s quiet northern region.
